Building Outside: Why This Term Matters. Secure Your Child’s Place

There is something powerful that happens when children are given time and space outdoors. Not rushed. Not over structured. Not over programmed. Just guided, intentional time in nature.

This Term 1, The Green Hour is partnering with Mount Martha Primary School to deliver a 6 week after school program beginning 24 February. The program will run on school grounds and within the Hearn Creek Reserve, offering children the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a meaningful way.

Time outside supports so much more than fresh air. Research consistently shows that being outdoors improves emotional regulation, focus, creativity, resilience, and social connection. It helps calm the nervous system. It builds confidence. It gives children room to move, to imagine, and to belong.

And then there is the magic of building.

This term, children will create bases and forts using natural materials, learning how to work together, problem solve, and think sustainably. Base building is not just play. It is collaboration. It is engineering. It is storytelling. It is leadership. It is resilience when something falls down and needs to be rebuilt.

We will also explore what it means to build sustainably. Using what is already present. Respecting the land. Leaving spaces better than we found them. Understanding that creativity and care can sit side by side.

The Green Hour is not about filling time. It is about creating space for growth. It is about grounding children in place, community, and themselves.

One hour outdoors, week after week, can build more than a base. It can build confidence. It can build connection. It can build belonging.
